While routine care and treatment from both healthcare organizations may be similar, the quality of care, affordability, and procedural rules could be vastly different. For-profit and nonprofit institutions differ beyond financial and economic policies and tax regulations; their main goal and mission also vary.In 2015, the total number of for-profit hospitals in the U.S. was 1,060, which makes up 21% of all community hospitals (Module 2, 2017). For-profit hospitals are normally owned by a group of investors, shareholders, and sometimes physicians working within the institution (Getzen, 2007). As stated in the name, for-profit hospitals primary goal is to make a profit. For-pro fit hospitals are ineligible for tax exemptions; they are required to pay state, local and federal taxes (Becker, 2014). For-profit hospitals also have access to capital and have better means in raising capital for medical equipment, facility upgrade, and HIT (health information technology).Nonprofit hospitals make about 58% of community hospitals, roughly 2,904 in 2015 (Module 2, 2017). Nonprofit hospitals are considered charitable or community driven because they accept anyone who enters their doors, regardless of the patients ability to pay; as a result, these institutions receive a tax exemption. Nonprofit hospitals also provide more specialized care and community benefits, such as preventative health education, smoking cessation programs, clinical services for low-income families, etc. (Writing, n.d).In regards to fairness, I feel the tax regulations are reasonable. When considering health organizations goals and values, nonprofit hospitals focuses more on providing effective a nd quality care to all patients, while for-profit hospitals focuses more on revenue. Providing community needs also differ for both organizational statuses and levels of unpaid care.
